Hey everyone,

I am looking to build a kegerator and can't find a mini fridge
without a shelf at that bottom. Ideally the shelf should be at the
top like this unit..

http://www.beveragefactory.com/refrigerators/beer/sanyo.shtml

I came up with the brainstorm idea of running the fridge upside
down and wondered if this would be possible and reasonable to do.
Does anyone know if it would be possible for me to modify the
refrigerator to run upside down? I have always heard that you should
never lay a refrigerator down but do not know why, can anyone explain
this.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

So all I would need to do is remove the compressor and flip it upside
right?

Smile

I can't just put some wood in to prop it up around the shelf because
it would put the top of the keg flush with the top of the mini
refrigerator not allowing any space for the tap. With the shelf at
the top I can use the space next to the shelf at the top for the tap.

If that was the case I would be done already, but seriously if you
have an issue with people who drink, just dont reply. Thanks for the
quick, smart ass answers.

Because it will shrink.

Surely, being a beer-head, you remember from Beer 101, on the
subject of 'laying them down' :

'You lay down at 2 with a 10, you wake up at 10 with a 2'

Now - why don't you just take some scrap wood and build
whatever support it needs ?

Thanks Chris,

I really appreciate your friendly tone and great answer to my
question. People like you make groups like this so great!

I think I have decided to just use a freezer and change the
thermostat. I just thought maybe changing the orientation could fit
the bill but it sounds like it would be way more work than it is
worth.

Thanks again,

Jeff

The bottom of a compressor holds lubricating oil. Which is noticably
different than 10W30 motor oil. But it does much the same thing. To turn a
compressor on its side risks getting oil in the piston chamber, and damaging
the valve. Compressor upside down would not lubricate properly.

The refrigeration system also uses gravity to return the oil to the
compressor, oil and refrigerant mix with each other. With the design of the
evaporator and compressor, it's possible that oil would collect in one or
the other. And the compressor would wear out sooner.

It's an interesting idea, but it would be more work than it's worth. You'd
have to redesign the system. Maybe get a full size refrig instead? I've seen
people with a full size refrig and a keg inside.

Y'welcome. I'm sure at least a few of the other posters will call me
clueless, and worse.

You may be disapointed at the service you get, using a freezer as a refrig.
I remember that using a refrig as a freezer provides all kinds of problems
with frosted evaporators.

It's been a couple years ago, but I did call tech support one time, about
using a couple three door upright freezers as refrigerators. I was told
that's not a good idea, the compressor doesn't run in long enough cycles.
The constant on and off rapidly increases the wear on the compressor.

But if it keeps your beer cold for a couple years, you got your use out of
it.

There a reason you're too cheap to buy a unit actually built for what
you want?
By the time you get done f'ing around you could probably bought two for
the price and aggravation.
Go look in the mirror. You are exactly the person we mean when we say
"cheap sob".
Maybe instead of getting pissed, you'll think about why you think like a
derelict.
